Dogmatix first appeared in *Astérix et le Chaudron* (*Asterix and the Cauldron*), originally conceived as a one-off character sitting outside a butcher's shop in Lutetia. Artist Albert Uderzo suggested he follow Asterix and Obelix throughout the story. The name 'Idéfix' was chosen via a contest in Pilote magazine, submitted by Hervé Ambroise, Dominique and Anne Boucard, and Rémi Dujat; it reflected the dog's 'fixed idea' to obtain a bone from the Gauls. He is fiercely protective of Obelix, often displaying jealousy or hostility toward women who show affection for him, such as Panacea in 'Asterix the Legionary' or Influenza in 'Asterix and Caesar's Gift.' Interestingly, while loyal to Obelix, he has never sided with Asterix against Obelix during arguments in stories like 'Asterix and the Soothsayer' or 'Obelix and Co.'

In 'Asterix the Legionary,' his loyalty was tested when he showed clear loathing for Panacea, though she immediately disarmed him with a kiss that sent him into a lovestruck daze. He also formed friendships that caused Obelix jealousy, notably with Pepe in 'Asterix in Spain' and 'Asterix in Corsica.' His only spoken dialogue appeared as a thought bubble in 'Asterix and the Magic Carpet,' where he commented on Cacofonix's musical skills while the bard criticized Wazizneim.
